Exactly Foundation – Entah Tak Tahu by Shahrom Mahat

By  •  December 12, 2019

Shahrom Mahat considers his identity as a half Malay, half Chinese person raised Malay-Muslim, and examines whether the Haji Lane area, known today for music, food and entertainment, still bears traces of its past as a hub of spirituality and scholarship for Malay culture and Haj pilgrims.

The keynote essay, Rejecting Ethnicity in Haji Lane? is written by Syed Farid Alatas. A professor of Sociology at the National University of Singapore, he has also headed the Department of Malay Studies at NUS from 2007 – 2013. He lectured at the University of Malaya in the Department of Southeast Asian Studies prior to joining NUS. In the early 1990s, he was a Research Associate at the Women and Human Resource Studies Unit, Science University of Malaysia. Professor Alatas has authored numerous books and articles, including Ibn Khaldun (Oxford University Press, 2003); Applying Ibn Khaldun: The Recovery of  Lost Tradition in Sociology (Routledge, 2014), and with Vineeta Sinha, Sociological Theory Beyond the Canon (Palgrave, 2017). His areas of interest include the sociology of Islam, social theory, religion and reform, intra- and inter-religious dialogue, and the study of Orientalism.

Exactly Foundation – Holding Space

By  •  December 11, 2019

Holding Space is a photographic project which seeks to hold space for families dealing with mortality, chronic illness and the fragility of life. The project does not attempt to look for answers as there is no prescriptive answer for what individuals and families in this position face. And yet, how families navigate such a personal, challenging time can be informative for the greater community. Using photography, found materials and interviews to consciously bear witness, Tan Ngiap Heng hopes to spark conversation. The contemplation of death and how we support those approaching death can teach us a lot about what is important in life, and can teach us to live life in a more meaningful way.

Holding Space is dedicated to the memory of Dr Tan Kheng Khoo (1931-2019) and Mrs Chung Hwang Siok-Eng (1919-2019).

The keynote essay, Caregivers and Holding Space, is by Dr Teoh Ren Shang. Dr Teoh graduated as a medical doctor from the National University of Singapore in 2003, and is currently working as a Resident Physician in the Singapore Cancer Society, where he cares for terminally ill cancer patients in their homes.

About Tan Ngiap Heng

Tan Ngiap Heng originally studied engineering but started working in the arts in 1995, as a programmer at The Esplanade. He has since been a professional photographer specialising in the performing arts, and also exhibits his photography and creates installations. In recent years, he mooted the Work in Process project which documents the rehearsal process of dance and theatre companies in Singapore as they prepare for production. He graduated with a Masters in Art (Fine Art) from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2018.

STAIRCASES by Khiev Kanel

By  •  November 27, 2019

Staircases looks at the White Building in Phonm Penh, Cambodia, which has since been demolished to make way for a casino. The seemingly unassuming site raises questions of capitalism, urban development, socioeconomics and geopolitics.

Against the backdrop of rapid development and influx of capital from foreign and local sources, Kanel Khiev’s photographs bear witness to the unrelenting changes and its effect on the place and its people.

The staircase as a building structure leading from one place to another parallels the idea of the transience of this community, which has been displaced for projects deemed more important.

About Khiev Kanel

Khiev Kanel (b. 1988, Phnom Penh, Cambodia) graduated in Computer Science and Auditing but turned to photography in 2013. He uses photography, moving image, and performance art to document and tell stories of personal, environmental and social issues. His personal work expresses self-depression from the loss of family members which could resonate with other people who experience similar issues. His other strand of work concerns social oppression, social justice and human rights, including the problems generated by urbanisation and environmental degradation such as eviction, land rights and pollution (water, air, noise, and light).
