A Documentary Photography Masterclass with Gary Knight

This December, join VII Photo Agency co-founder and photojournalist Gary Knight, in a 3-day intensive master class to learn more about and embark on purpose-driven documentary projects. Since 1988, Gary has covered global conflicts, human rights and the impact of war on civilians as a freelance photojournalist. He is now an experienced educator and engages in capacity building efforts.

This class is ideal for intermediate to advanced photographers with an interest in developing personal photo projects, telling compelling stories and contextualising social issues in-depth.

Some of the topics in this master class include:
– Planning your documentary photography project: sources, subjects, gear
– How to structure your project
– Finding the right outlet for your work
– Sustaining long-term projects

 

COURSE OVERVIEW

Session 1: Thu 15 Dec, 10am - 5pm

• Introduction to documentary photography
• Discussion about Gary Knight’s career
• Review of participants’ previous works and areas of interest
• Planning your project: sources, subjects, gear

• Outdoor shoot with a specific assignment

Session 2: Fri 16 Dec, 10am - 5pm
AM
• Participants to go out and shoot on given assignment. Onsite consultations with Gary Knight
• Meet at Objectifs at 12 noon. 
• Mid-day critique session
• Shooting and structuring assignments
• Ethics of documentary photography

PM
• Outdoor shoot on second short assignment

Session 3: Sat 17 Dec, 10am - 5pm
AM
• Participants to go out and shoot on given assignment. Onsite consultations with Gary Knight.

• New perspectives on documentary photography

Pre-requisites:

Participants are required to bring a DSLR for the workshop. Basic photography proficiency is required.
