TWENTYFIFTEEN Book – OUR COASTLINE by Lim Weixiang

By  •  January 19, 2017

The second book for TWENTYFIFTEEN, Lim Weixiang documented the coastline of Singapore. This personal project sprung from an visit to the beach, and has subsequently triggered his curiosity to find out if the people along the coast are like him, seeking an answer.

The founders of Platform – Tay Kay Chin, Darren Soh, Ernest Goh and Leonard Goh – initiated TWENTYFIFTEEN to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Singapore’s independence. 20 photographers have been chosen to create 15 images each, with a folio published for each photographer in the months leading up to August 9, 2015.

TWENTYFIFTEEN Book – COMMONWEALTH by Nicky Loh

By  •  January 19, 2017

“For the past eight years, my family and I have lived at Commonwealth Drive. The first home I ever owned was a small but cosy three-room flat on the seventh floor of block 79. But I’m just a ‘baby’ in the neighbourhood compared to some of my neighbours, who have lived in Commonwealth Drive for most of their lives. This cluster of ten-storey flats – more popularly known as Zhup Lao (“ten floors” in Teochew or Hokkien) – was one of the first satellite towns built in 1962 by the Housing Development Board (HDB), and I’ve heard a wealth of stories about the area from my neighbours and local shop owners.

Last year, HDB announced that these flats would be redeveloped under the Selective En Bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS). It’s sad to think that with the demolition of these blocks, all these old and long-lasting ties will be uprooted and lost forever. I love how this neighbourhood oozes old-world charm with its provision shops, barbers and traditional medicine halls. I’m trying to document as much as I can before it all vanishes.

Many of these things also remind me of my grandmother, who brought me up. I’d like to think that I’m honouring her in this series of photographs.”

Woo Ming Jin Collection – The Tiger Factory / Woman on Fire Looks For Water

By  •  October 6, 2016

This special 2-DVD collection presents the best of acclaimed Malaysian arthouse filmmaker Woo Ming Jin’s films, The Tiger Factory and Woman on Fire Looks for Water.

In The Tiger Factory, 19-year-old Ping works in a pig farm and cleans dishes in a rundown restaurant but longs to go to Japan to work in a car parts company. Under the guardianship of her aunt, Madame Tien, she shuffles between two jobs. Tien is also involved in a secret “baby factory” scheme, pairing young women with illegal migrant workers with the aim of selling the babies for money. The two women survive each other in a symbiotic love-hate manner, until the true nature of her aunt is revealed to Ping.

Woman on Fire Looks for Water tells the story of a father and son, and their relationship with the women in their lives. Ah Fei sells frogs from his motorbike, while his father, Ah Kan, is part of a dying breed of fishermen in an old coastal village. They share a quiet, but strong relationship. The film follows these two characters as one of them faces death, while the other is only becoming a man.
