The Objectifs Artist Studio programme provides photographers, filmmakers and visual artists working in the medium of film and/or photography with a space to research, create and develop new work.

For Oct-Nov 2018, we welcomed educator, writer, and image-maker Nurul Huda. Lecturing in different subjects across Anthropology, Liberal and Visual Arts, she commutes across different classrooms with a love for facilitation and performance. She is also a researcher whose interests focus on issues concerning the visual and sentient body, visual imagery and methodologies, narratives (text and the telling), and feminism. This often ties up with notions of identity, both as expressed through Self and Other. Her research interests are manifested through different medium, in both text and the visual.

As part of Nurul’s studio residence, she is exploring images of women in war and how they reflect the ways in which women’s bodies are photographed and represented; and in thinking about how women respond to acts and sites of violence.

For the open studio sessions, she would like to invite interested participants to share and reflect on the experiences and ways women perform or gesture in relation to everyday micro-aggressions, situations of inequality, and acts of violence and trauma; to think about how these gestures are stored, buried, or performed by our bodies. What are the impacts of such gestures? How can we begin to discuss possible gestures of healing?

The discussions will be based on reflections of visuals as well as some making-activities.
