In the Still of the Night (While You Were Sleeping)

$75.00

In the Still of the Night (While You Were Sleeping) is a collection of photographs of large-scale nocturnal landscapes of Singapore by award-winning architectural and landscape photographer Darren Soh. In this series, he visits banal, empty spaces in the far reaches of Singapore, some of which he had photographed for an earlier series, While You Were Sleeping, which was published in 2004. He documents the drastic transformations that these spaces have undergone over time– changes which have gone unnoticed by the man on the street due to their ordinary and geographically insignificant nature. Through his images, he presents an unfamiliar side of Singapore and reflects on the transient quality of their existence in an ever-evolving city.

The book includes a foreword by Darren Soh and essays by designer and academic geographer Joshua Comaroff, and writer and researcher Justin Zhuang.

“In many ways, the Singapore Story is one of human beings bending a tiny island to their will. Unfortunately, the unintended consequence is that we end up continually destroying the old in order to create the new. My personal photographic journey has become a mission to fervently document this relentless change — to record these spaces so that the people who come after us may know then too, albeit only in a digital representation.” – an excerpt from Darren Soh’s foreword.
