On a Japanese island, life revolves around the changing seasons. Winter is time for ice hockey at school, but Takuya isn’t too thrilled about it. His real interest lies in Sakura, a figure skating rising star from Tokyo, for whom he starts to develop a genuine fascination. Coach and former champion Arakawa, spots potential in Takuya, and decides to mentor him to form a duo with Sakura for an upcoming competition.

As winter persists, feelings grow, and the two children form a harmonious bond. But even the first snow eventually melts away.

Ryhan’s latest photo book, I saved a seat for you 「あなたの席を取っておいだよー」, is a compressed archive of photographs and words dating back to 2019. Equal parts love and loss, visual images creating a bridge in the present to a well grieved past. Are human beings capable of segmenting and isolating memories from the past? The images and texts were collected over a six year period from 2019 to 2025.

About Ryhan

Since 2019 Ryhan has been residing in Japan working within the agriculture sector. From farming green tea to researching heritage food products (sea salt and spices) for her PhD, practising photography has provided her with a way of reconciling the paradoxical arcs of academia and art. A deep yearning to bring her findings to a wider audience. Traversing between nostalgia and the allure of new memories is the fabric of her unapologetically human behaviour.

Entitled The Unofficial Archive, this project presents a selection from the collection, divided into Books and Ephemera. Included are materials spanning photojournalism, fine art, and commercial photography, printed within and outside the country, including places like Hong Kong, Japan, and the Soviet Union. With dates of publication ranging from the 1950s to the present day, the selection encompasses a variety of issues and visual tropes through a pivotal moment in Vietnam’s national and photographic history as the country emerged from the aftermath of colonialism followed by the Vietnam War, known domestically as the Resistance War against America. Works and practices from this period continue to inspire explorations in recently published titles. Taken together, they demonstrate the varied roles that photography has played in Vietnam, from a nation-building device to a tool for self-expression.

MARG1N is an annual Southeast Asian film magazine by writers, filmmakers, and artists. Our second issue honors memories and gazes that drift through Singapore and Vietnam. Through essays, visual scripts, archives, and more, TRACES unearths the flotsam, jetsam, and derelict that churns throughout or beneath today’s cinematic currents.

Traces are fragmentary by nature. You can never deduce a comprehensive view from a trace. Traces gesture, shock, defy, and aspire toward a greater truth than their whole existence. In some way, a film is also a collection of traces, with the hope of invoking in its viewers a sense of wonder and resonance that makes us pause, perhaps rewatch, and rethink certain rigidities. The writings that we have worked with in this issue embody that generative power of traces.
