Each workshop group consists of 2 sessions. Registrants of each group must be able to attend both sessions.

This workshop is part of HAN@Katong-Joo Chiat, presented by Katong Culture, Objectifs Centre, and supported by the National Heritage Board, as part of Heritage Activation Nodes.

What does it mean to belong to a place? And what happens when we bring something into it?

Moving beyond nostalgic ideas of heritage, this photo-walk and zine-making workshop invites participants to explore the multicultural neighbourhood of Katong-Joo Chiat through personal experiences of displacement, loss, memory, and belonging. Using image-making and zine-making, participants will explore the unexpected connections, tensions, and stories that emerge when different places and different parts of ourselves meet. In these encounters, Katong-Joo Chiat becomes a starting point for considering how our identities and sense of place are shaped by layers of experiences, influences, and histories — and what we, in turn, bring to the places we encounter.

Session One: Seeing and Encountering

This session will delve into ways of seeing through photography. It will include an introduction to photography and ask questions of images, perspective, and composition, as well as how we tell stories through photographs.

Session One will include a guided photo walk, where participants are invited to bring a personal object connected to a sense of ‘someplace else’ — for example, a country, city, or neighbourhood, a different time, or even an imaginary place. The object will serve as a starting point for thinking about what we bring with us when we encounter a place.

After the walk, participants will review their photographs together, using the images to generate further ideas, thoughts, and questions.

Session Two: Storytelling through Sequencing and Zine-making

How does placing one image beside another change what we see? And how might a sequence of images begin to tell a story?

Building on the photographs and ideas generated during the photo walk, this session introduces participants to storytelling through sequencing and zine-making. Participants will explore how images can speak to, interrupt, and transform one another when brought together, and how the arrangement of photographs can create unexpected connections, narratives, and ways of seeing.

Participants will then create their own photo zine, experimenting with the relationship between images, sequence, and form. The session will conclude with an informal photo-zine sharing, where participants can encounter one another’s work, exchange ideas, and reflect on the different stories that have emerged from the same neighbourhood.

All materials required for zine-making will be provided.

For session one

Things to bring: A smartphone or digital camera that you are familiar with. A personal object connected to a sense of ‘someplace else’.

Attire: The walk will proceed rain or shine. Participants are advised to dress comfortably, wear suitable walking shoes, and bring an umbrella or poncho, as well as sufficient water.

For session two

Nil. All zine-making materials will be provided.

Aparna Nori

Aparna Nori is a lens based artist whose practice draws from lived experiences with a particular interest in themes of personal memory and identity. Her response is articulated through a range of mediums including photography, alternative photographic processes, video art and the book form. As a pedagogic extension of her practice, she designs and facilitate workshops to teach visual storytelling, bookmaking and alternative photographic processes.
