VIRIDIAN is a community created by and for individuals with multicultural experiences in Japan. The magazine celebrates emerging talents, shining a spotlight on music, art, and academia. Our mission is to uplift these creatives by sharing their journeys and the challenges they’ve overcome to become who they are today.
Our first issue, Issue 00, was published in December 2023 and directed/produced by Kale Ishigami (Photography & Design) and Julia Takada (Writing & Editing). It features two in-depth interviews:
- MOE (model, Japan): reflecting on her experiences growing up mixed-race in Japan and navigating questions of identity and belonging.
- Rino Nakajima (Sex Education Producer): offering her perspective on the gaps between sex education in Japan and overseas, and how multicultural exposure shaped her path. She also shares the story behind her petition “Making Japanese Search Results Appropriate”, an initiative that brought tangible change in supporting survivors of sexual harm.
Since its launch, VIRIDIAN has continued to grow both online and offline, creating not only a publication but also a community where cross-cultural voices in Japan can connect, collaborate, and be seen.
