Shared Currents

Curated by Goh Chun Aik
Featuring photographs by Michael Eko & Silvana Sutanto

Objectifs – Centre for Photography and Film presents Shared Currents, the Silvana S Photography Award Exhibition. Established by the Silvana S. Foundation in 2020, the award recognises Southeast Asian photography projects that champion environmental and youth causes. This recipient of this year’s award is Michael Eko, an Indonesian documentary photographer, whose works focuses on environmental transformations, sociocultural conditions, and other overlooked narratives.

Rivers have long shaped human histories. They sustain life, provide fertile grounds for agriculture, and facilitate trade and cultural exchange that have given rise to cities and empires. Shared Currents traces these living threads through Michael Eko’s ongoing project Kapuas Mahakam and a selection of Silvana Sutanto’s photographs of the Asmat people from Agats. Beyond carrying people and goods, these rivers transport stories, knowledge, memory, and collective imagination, revealing how indigenous communities respond to ecological change through resilience and continuity.

Through these photographic encounters, the exhibition invites us to reflect on the shared psychogeographical landscapes that connect distant communities and viewers alike. In a time of accelerating environmental change, Shared Currents considers how we might navigate an unstable future by attending to the enduring lessons of coexistence, interdependence, and collective imagination carried by the rivers.

About the artists

About Michael Eko

Michael Eko is a documentary photographer from Indonesia. His work centers around environmental, sociocultural, and human rights issues, as well as other often overlooked topics, and has been featured in numerous publications, exhibitions, books, media and cultural outlets, including World Press Photo, National Geography Society, among others. By collaborating with media outlets, civil society groups, and local communities, Michael weaves visual storytelling into a multidisciplinary approach aimed at fostering meaningful societal change.

About Silvana Sutanto

Indonesia-born Silvana Sutanto (1957 – 2016) spent most of her adult life in Singapore. As she discovered her voice through the photographic medium, and joy in conveying stories through images, she set out on a dedicated path to deepen her practice. She undertook an apprenticeship with a professional photographer in Hong Kong that spanned several years, and later travelled to remote regions such as Kenya, Papua New Guinea and Alaska. These expeditions allowed her to engage with the natural world through the lens of her camera. Silvana was fearless in her pursuit of the perfect shot, stepping out bravely into untrodden terrain and often braving the wild in harsh conditions. Her keen eye was recognised with numerous exhibitions and awards.

About the Silvana S. Foundation Ltd.

The Silvana S. Foundation Ltd. was established in 2016 to continue Silvana Sutanto’s legacy. The foundation aims to support underprivileged children, environmental issues and wildlife conservation through her photographic work, as she has always done throughout her life.

About the Curator

Based in Singapore, Goh Chun Aik’s practice situates itself within the convergence of individual and shared realities. Drawing from personal experiences, the immediate environment, and overlooked moments, he examines how we process reality as a way to reconsider our relationship with existing systems and structures.

Through his works, he strives to craft encounters that translate individual perceptions into tangible forms – typically existing as images and texts, and at times realised through collaborations and exhibition-making. In doing so, he hopes to manifest the vast possibilities that emerge when different worlds overlap.

Recent projects include A Reservoir of Time (2024) at Objectifs Chapel Gallery as the recipient of the Curator Open Call, and solo exhibition An Exhibition About Art (2023) at Hearth by Art Outreach, as well as exhibiting as part of the 8th and 9th editions of the Singapore International Photography Festival (2022, 2024). He also initiated an instructional art project Process: Roving Ideas (2023) during the Singapore Art Week 2023, and co-runs Queensway Television, an independent video art space.
