Saturdate x Now Showing: Music in June
A gathering space and an outdoor film programme highlighting the playful and creative forms of photography and filmmaking
This June, join us for a special Saturdate x Now Showing edition celebrating music and the communities and art it inspires! Browse art books with Part Time Book Club, stay for an acoustic performance by freereina!, and wander through a small market celebrating local creatives, and small businesses. As night falls, the space transforms with a curated short film programme to close the day on a nice note.
JUNE ACTIVITIES
1) Part Time Book Club
2pm – 4pm
Free Admission
RSVP or find out more about the session here.
Part Time Book Club (PTBC) began in November 2024 as a spontaneous initiative between two friends, Shu and Ming, sparked by a simple truth: there are far too many good art books out there in the world, and not enough time to discover them alone. What began as a shared curiosity has since grown into a community-powered space where art book lovers come together to connect and uncover new titles. PTBC gatherings typically take the form of ad-hoc gatherings focused on the sharing and discovery of (art) books.
This edition’s theme is “Noise”. What is noise, and what is music? The line between them is often thin and porous. Rather than dismissing or blocking out noise, PTBC invites you to get curious and listen to what it has to offer—whether it emerges from deliberate artistic choices or the sounds that surround us every day. For some, noise is distortion and feedback. For others, it’s traffic, birds, air-conditioning, bad recordings, or a neighbour practising scales. Bring a book that explores noise in its many forms—from the intentional to the accidental, and everything in between.
2) freereina! Acoustic Performance (Rating TBC)
4pm – 5pm
freereina! is a project about catharsis. Their dense, euphoric songwriting weaves through a multilayered DNA: equally indebted to Japanese indie rock’s emotive maximalism, hypergaze assaults via Shibuya-kei terrain; mathy confessionals dripping through glittering electronics. Born from a new age of digital melancholia, their wall of guitars craft songs that resonate with a deep piercing blue. The band has opened for international acts including xiexie (JP), Weatherday (SWE), and Chestnut Bakery (CN).
They’ll be presenting a stripped down version of their bittersweet sound for Objectifs Saturdate!
3) Sound and Print Fair
1pm – 6pm
A small market featuring local creatives, for music lovers and stationery enthusiasts. This edition, we have curated an afternoon of music-themed goods, paper products, sweet treats and more.
Vendors:
– ChiAçai
– freereina! and friends
– Leitmotif Studio
– Offcut
– OK Compact Disc
4) Now Showing: Causeway Hiphop Music Video Playlist
7.30pm – 9.30pm
Entry by donation, RSVP here
Riffing off the music-themed June edition of Saturdate, the first drop of this year’s Now Showing is coming at you slicker than a piece of roti canai and hotter than a scoop of chicken rice chilli. Featuring a mixtape of hip-hop music videos from Malaysia and Singapore, this programme is an irreverent ode to the quirks and contradictions of our unique and overlapping cultures, filtered through beats, rhymes and bars. Paired with the screening will be a live DJ set of regional and global south hip-hop.
