$5.00
This special 2-DVD collection presents the best of acclaimed Malaysian arthouse filmmaker Woo Ming Jin’s films, The Tiger Factory and Woman on Fire Looks for Water.
In The Tiger Factory, 19-year-old Ping works in a pig farm and cleans dishes in a rundown restaurant but longs to go to Japan to work in a car parts company. Under the guardianship of her aunt, Madame Tien, she shuffles between two jobs. Tien is also involved in a secret “baby factory” scheme, pairing young women with illegal migrant workers with the aim of selling the babies for money. The two women survive each other in a symbiotic love-hate manner, until the true nature of her aunt is revealed to Ping.
Woman on Fire Looks for Water tells the story of a father and son, and their relationship with the women in their lives. Ah Fei sells frogs from his motorbike, while his father, Ah Kan, is part of a dying breed of fishermen in an old coastal village. They share a quiet, but strong relationship. The film follows these two characters as one of them faces death, while the other is only becoming a man.
