Cardboard Lamps & Adequate Images

The ubiquitous cardboard box is the subject for this loop-stitched booklet and are presented as materials for constructing 7 different lamp designs alongside instructional diagrams and ‘product photographs’. Small two-colour thumbnail-size pictures are overlaid and scattered in random sequences throughout the pages. The booklet contains a short text written by the artist which offers a rather demoralising outlook on the global pandemic, the climate crisis, and choosing to be an artist.


About Lai Yu Tong

Lai Yu Tong is an artist based in Singapore whose works span across image-making, painting, drawing and installation. His practice attempts to make sense of the world through acts of recording, arranging and storytelling. His recent works consider how art can evoke empathy in a world so damaged.

Lai has presented his work at group exhibitions in Singapore and abroad, most recently at Plague Space (RUS) and Barely Art Fair (US); and held solo exhibitions in Singapore at Temporary Unit (2022), The Substation (2021), Comma Space (2020), and DECK (2019).

Besides his art, Lai regularly publishes books under Thumb Books, his 2022 self-founded press that makes children’s books for both children and adults. Lai’s recent curatorial projects include Frida (2023), a project where he invites artists to present their works by a window at his home studio; and Robin (2022), an exhibition series that presented group exhibitions in nomadic camping tents around
