Image Makers: Singapore Photographers

The Image Makers short documentary series uncovers the processes and motivations behind internationally renowned photographers from Singapore. Through interviews and reviews of their works, we attempt to get to the heart of the work and their approach to art creation. Image Makers is a project initiated by photographer Tan Ngiap Heng, Objectifs and production house The Creative Room.

Image Makers: Sim Chi Yin / dir. by Ric Aw

Written and narrated by Sim Chi Yin, she traces her family’s forgotten roots, and how it has influenced her and her work. She also explores this in her later project 𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘺 𝘞𝘦’𝘭𝘭 𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥. Sim Chi Yin is an artist and photographer whose works often explore issues relating to history, memory, conflict and migration, and their consequences. Her work has been featured in numerous international group and solo exhibitions including institutions in Hong Kong, Singapore, Italy, South Korea and Turkey. 

Image Makers: John Clang / dir. by Kirsten Tan

Learn about the craft and process of photographer/visual artist John Clang. John Clang is a photographer artist. His fascination with time, displacement and existentialism influence his work. His first exhibition, at 20 yrs old, was a duo-show at the controversial (and now defunct) Singapore art group 5th Passage Artists. He has since participated in solo and group exhibitions in China, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States. 

Image Makers: Robert Zhao Renhui / dir. by Jow Zhi Wei 

A Guide to Flora and Fauna looks at photographer Robert Zhao Renhui’s fascination with the relationship humans have with animals and the environment. Robert works mainly with photography but often adopts a multi-disciplinary approach by presenting images together with documents and objects. His work includes textual and media analysis, video and performance.

Image Makers: Darren Soh / dir. by Chai Yee Wei 

Since 2001, Darren has been a full time independent photographer doing a mixture of personal, editorial and commercial work with particular interest in architectural and landscape photography. Over the years, Darren has been placed in several international photography awards including the Commonwealth Photographic Awards,the Prix de la Photographie, Paris and the International Photography Awards. He talks about his motivations and craft in this documentary. 

Image Makers: Chow Chee Yong / dir. by Pok Yue Weng

Photographer and educator Chow Chee Yong has participated in more than 30 solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums in Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the US. He shares about his craft and process in this short documentary.

Portrait photographer Russel Wong shares the beginnings of his career, his inspirations, his personal vision and his relationship with celebrity subjects in this documentary by Jean Qingwen Loo.

Image Makers: Tay Kay Chin / dir. by Chen-Hsi Wong

Tay Kay Chin spent more than a decade in newspapers in Singapore and USA, and held positions from Photographer to Presentation editor. Since leaving his last full-time newspaper job in 2001, he splits his time between lecturing, consulting, writing, and working on selected commercial as well as personal projects.

C.S. Ling is an international award-winning wildlife photographer based in Singapore. Her compelling images of vanishing landscape & endangered wildlife coupled with her dedication to educate the younger generation has earned her much recognition.

Image Makers: Ho Hui May / dir. by Liao Jiekai

Darkroom is a dialogue between photographer-educator Ho Hui May and filmmaker Liao Jiekai. Hui May is currently a Vice Dean of Fine Art Programmes at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Previously, she has taught at the Diploma and Degree levels at the Department of Fine Art of NAFA as well as at the School of Art, Design and Media of the Nanyang Technological University.
