Hidden Realms of Lotus

The lotus has always been a soulful entity in Eastern art and culture, embodying profound spirit and poetry. Hidden Realms of Lotus is jointly presented by three photographers, Ng Yow Meng, S T Tan and Felicia Lim. Using their lenses as brushes, they elevate photography into a painterly artistic conception, exploring the charm and life philosophy of the lotus from different perspectives across three main themes: “Purity”, “Melody”, and “Oneirism”.

“Purity” is the crystallization of the soul.
“Melody” is the rhythm of nature.
“Oneirism” is the elevation of artistic conceptions.

The interpretations of three photographers come together to form a journey of lotus rhythm, where poetic imagery intertwine with light and shadow.

About the Photographers

Ng Yow Meng is an engineer by training and a Police officer by profession. He has devoted to the art of photography since 1974 till today and has also learned Chinese brush painting and calligraphy for several years after retirement. Combining these hobbies gives him a smattering of understanding of photographic techniques and the composition of traditional Chinese painting. He is now attempting a painterly approach to photography, using lotus flower, birds and insects as subjects, employing multiple exposure and layering techniques to achieve the effect of Chinese paintings. Through this, he seeks to explore the intersection of traditional aesthetics and modern technology, making each frame of image a traditional Chinese painting with a realm of painterly poem.

With a background in applied art and interior design, S T Tan founded his interior design firm in 1987. In 2008, he expanded into photography to blend art theory with light and shadow. This lotus photography exhibition represents a harmonious synthesis of his lifelong artistic refinement and pictorial aesthetic. Using the lens as brush, he invites viewers into a dynamic scroll of ink-wash lotus imagery, where Eastern poetic expression beautifully intertwines with contemporary light and shadow.

Felicia Lim is currently working as a tax advisor in the Energy industry. She took up photography in 2004 and obtained her life membership with Photography Society of Singapore in 2013. She enjoys travelling and with her love for arts, photography has blended nicely with these interests. Over the last 10 years, she has growingly dedicated to flower and lotus photography. The mist-veiled lotus pond and the faintly visible lotus boom, is a dreamlike and poetic realm gifted by nature, allowing her to immerse in the state of serenity.
