‘Bad Clocks’ is an ongoing concept explored by visual art collective DASSAD to reconsider the ways we understand and define time.
As the first iteration of ‘Bad Clocks’, the collective invited artists, Euginia Tan, Neo Jialing and Victoria Hertel, to create works in response to a camera obscura constructed in the Lower Gallery of Objectifs. The exhibition took place at Objectifs Lower Gallery between 6 January – 4 February 2023, and was part of Singapore Art Week 2023.
Using the camera obscura as a point of departure, ‘Bad Clocks: Alley Through A Pinhole’ frames a collective experience of reality that is both objective and subjective, blurring lines of distance, space and time. The exhibition imparts whimsicality, softness, and malleability; reflective of the processes in which the artists attempt to negotiate the larger-than-life notion of time.
This zine presents the broad ideas, experimentations and contemplations discussed during an artist talk held on 28 January 2023 at the Objectifs Workshop Space. Moderated by Chelsea Chua, the conversation was the first time that DASSAD came together with their artist-collaborators to consider and reflect upon the making of ‘Bad Clocks: Alley Through A Pinhole’. As a document, the zine serves to archive the exhibition and the different ways of thinking, creating and collaborating catalysed through the gesture of exhibition-making.
