RESILIENCE – STORIES OF WOMEN INSPIRING CHANGE
Courtyard
The  World Press Photo Foundationand the Kingdom of the Netherlands present Resilience – stories of women inspiring change. The exhibition showcases a selection of stories, awarded in the World Press Photo Contests from 2000 to 2021, that highlight the resilience and challenges of women, girls and communities around the world. Multiple voices, documented by 17 photographers of 13 different nationalities, offer insights into issues including sexism, gender-based violence, reproductive rights, and access to equal opportunities. The stories explore how women and gender issues have evolved in the 21st century and how photojournalism has developed in the ways of portraying them. The exhibition coincides with the United Nations’ Orange the World Campaign, a world-wide campaign to end violence against women.

POETRY IN PATTERNS
Lower Galleries
Poetry in Patterns by artist Lynn Loo explores unusual forms of moving-image using a combination of systems and chance methods. Active experimentation with materials leads to unintentional outcomes that resist explicit meanings and invite interpretation. The two installations, a video work and a looped 16mm projection work, take inspiration from patterns found in nature, in our daily lives and within the filmmaking process itself. In addition to the gallery installations there will be an evening of film projection performances, and a 16mm film workshop.

NOTHING BUT SINGAPORE
Lower Galleries
This photographic exhibition shares French designer Christophe Gaubert’s view on a place initially foreign to him. From details to patterns, the images unfold the complex dialogue woven between the living and the built, in a form of harmony and sometimes conflict that speaks as much to the origins as to the trajectory of an evolving city in nature. As a tribute to the beauty of this place, each photograph, made over the last seven years, is a pretext to talk about what escapes the eye but profoundly connects us to our environment.

[collected on paper] OCCASION #1: TIME CAPSULES
Objectifs Library
Co-programmed by artist Hong Shu-ying and Objectifs, [collected on paper] offers a chance to explore different art books and the creators’ thoughts in an intimate setting, with notes on their processes and materials. The first occasion will reflect on the idea of time capsules. The books featured share some qualities with time capsules–most of the images in these books were not originally intended to become part of a book, and they gain additional readings over time, yet become irreplicable, as the shift in time directly impacts their context. Featuring Aparna Nori – 24 Slides, George Wong – Wallet, Lai Yu Tong – Things I Bought, Things I Threw Away, Things I Ate, Things I Saw, Things I Made, and Other Things (For Future Reference), Lou / Atelier HOKO – Spider & Man. The programme includes a Book Club, and Book Sharing session.

SUBCONSCIOUSNESS
Lower Galleries
Subconscious is photographer Betty Goh’s long term project about the introspective reflections of her soul and subconscious. Growing up in the heart of Singapore, the adrenaline rush and vibrancy of this busy city excites her. At the same time, she feels an amount of unspoken loneliness, tension and dilemma hidden beneath the surface. These overlapping and complex emotions are often expressed through Betty’s subconscious during her daily street walks and hence, the result of her visual poetry. Through her unique use of reflections, shadows, silhouettes, long exposure, lines, shapes and spaces, Betty captures the subtle psychological aspects of a busy urban street life.

TIMELESS YOUTH
Lower Gallery
Timeless Youth is a collaborative exhibition by Korean artist Choi Minkyung and Singaporean artist Sit Weng San that investigates individual & collective aspirations for youth and newness. It attempts to understand how the phenomena is echoed in all aspects of our lives; from identities to our bodies to urban spaces, and in social, cultural, scientific, and virtual spheres. The two-channel installation, A Manual for Timeless Youth is an instructional video on how to achieve eternal youth. Following the guidelines of “Erase, Control, Colonize, and Disguise”, the work bridges the artists’ embodied experiences, social phenomena in the wellness, anti-aging industries, urban redevelopment, and modernization projects in their respective ‘post-colonized’ cities of Seoul and Singapore.

THE YEARNING FOR HARMONY
Objectifs Annexe
Since 2019, Ryhan M.Y. has been residing in Japan. From farming green tea to researching sea salt, practising photography has provided her with a way of reconciling the paradoxical feelings of discomfort and joy while exploring her new home. This creative outlet became especially poignant during a time when borders in Japan were closed and there were numerous insecurities about the future. Each photograph chosen represents a specific moment of beauty and longing for Ryhan. When being in the present also alludes to a well grieved past, this yearning for harmony between nostalgia and the allure of new memories is the fabric of her unapologetically human behaviour. Ryhan has also collaborated with potter DaybyDae  and DJ/producer MZA, in an attempt to make the rootlessness, tangible.

LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DEBRIS
Lower Gallery
The planetary issue of outer space debris is one that, while distant from public consciousness, is emerging to be an urgent environmental concern. Dead satellites, spent rocket stages, and fragments from collisions circle the Earth in rings of debris, where even the smallest paint chip, travelling at astonishing speeds in zero-gravity, bears destructive capabilities. Humanity has always looked to the night sky to make sense of the universe we live in. We observe patterns in its complex tapestry, imagine fantastical characters, and tell stories to guide us through time. How do we, then, see and relate to a sky in which today, a dense, orbiting web of manmade machines overlaps our vision of the cosmos?

Lucy in the Sky with Debris by artist Isabella Ong and curator Seet Yun Teng, takes this, among other intersecting threads, as a starting point. A research and visual art project merging astronomy, cartography, mythology, and material culture, it aims to generate a layered reframing of the space debris issue, exploring alternative ways to visualise and communicate the environmental problem that parallels the ecological crises on Earth. It presents Errant Stars, a kinetic installation, and a display of research materials. This showcase marks the culmination of a 18-month research and artistic development process that serves as the first phase of a multi-year project.

SILHOUETTES OF HAVING BEEN
Lower Gallery
An exhibition by filmmaker and artist duo Mark Chua and Lam Li Shuen, devised as a response to the site of Objectifs. Focusing on fallen hair strands as a central material, it is a reflection and turning of attention toward physical presences and the possibilities in being together between time and images. The invisible becomes visible and the minute becomes magnificent as teeming lines are silhouetted against light.

Over a period of time, fallen hair strands by people passing through Objectifs were collected. The strands were adhered to film loops running through 16mm and Super 8 projectors, in a live expanded cinema performance taking place before the exhibition. This was done alongside live modifications of the performed film with ink and lenticular interventions, in combination with an improvisational soundscape with the film loops prepared as percussive elements. As a result, the film loops were physically altered by the live process, creating a unique, unrepeatable moving image piece that forms the core of the exhibition. In the exhibition, Chua and Lam wish to invite an encounter with the materiality and speculative fictions of fallen hair as a bodily response which silently traces our existences. What do they say and express, these silhouettes of having been?

In Youth in Loop, artist Alecia Neo explores the perspectives of young people on mental health, inviting them to reflect upon the loops they navigate by sharing their own framework of care. Beyond the individual, she also examines larger cultural and societal structures that limit and guide our responses towards mental illness in Singapore. / Fertility is not just a female issue that ends with childbirth and as self-apparent as it seems, the decision to have a child has life-long consequences for all parties involved. In National Service, Kerry Cheah documents different families and their routines at similar times of the day, bringing to life these “consequences” as a way of instigating reflection.
