Sound editing and design for film is not just a technical job but also a creative one.
In this seminar recommended for pre-professionals to professionals, BAFTA and Oscar-nominated (most recently for La La Land, 2016) Singaporean sound designer Ai-Ling Lee will draw from her 20 years of experience working in Hollywood and use specific examples from three films she has worked on — La La Land (2016), Wild (2014) and The Maze Runner (2014) — to discuss:
- From script to sound: How a sound designer in Los Angeles works with the rest of a film’s creative team
- What happens before and during production
- How sound design affects film language
- Different processes of post-production sound for features: sound Fx recording, dialog, ADR, sound design, foley, and mixing.

About Ai-Ling Lee
Ai-Ling Lee was born in Singapore, where she studied music audio engineering. After two years of mixing and editing commercials and music, she moved to Los Angeles in 1998 to pursue a career in sound design for feature films. Since then she has worked as a sound designer, re-recording mixer and sound supervisor on a variety of films.
Ai-Ling has had the opportunity to work with directors Damien Chazelle, Jean-Marc Vallée, Wes Ball, Cameron Crowe, Gus Van Sant and Sam Raimi, to name a few, on popular Hollywood films such as Spider-Man 2 (2004), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), Tangled (2010), Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011), 300: Rise of an Empire (2014), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), Wild (2014), The Maze Runner (2014), Deadpool (2016) and critically acclaimed musical-drama La La Land (2016).
She has been nominated for two Academy Awards (editing and mixing), a BAFTA, six MPSE awards, and won a CAS award for Best Sound Mixing.
About Lim Ting Li
Lim Ting Li is a sound designer, re-recording mixer and foley artist. Her foray into sound for films started in 2004. She has worked on several award winning films including Boo Junfeng’s Sandcastle, Kirsten Tan’s Pop-Aye and Tan Pin Pin’s In Time to Come. She is currently the Director of Sound at Mocha Chai Laboratories.
