SAND is the last in a series of six publications unpacking ideas of discipline and space. The book features three explorations of “sand” and its relation to Singapore as a city-state.
Clarissa Oon’s essay explores the place of sand in our playgrounds, reclaimed land and artistic imaginations, while Faiz Bin Zohri proposes a speculative vision of 2065, where rising sea levels have placed a premium on elevated ground, leading to a great land declamation. The book closes with an essay by Discipline the City co-curator Joshua Comaroff, who delves into Singapore’s rapacious land expansion and its implications.
Launched in conjunction with the Substation’s Discipline the City activities is a series of chapbooks that provide diverse responses to the theme. Edited by Adeline Chia, Associate Editor of Art Review Asia, formats range from essays to photography and illustrations. Content includes topics as specialised as the architectural and urban planning aspects of spatial organisation, to the cultural and social aspects of discipline, such as how bodies and sexualities are policed.
