Explore photography and film through hands-on short workshops!
School’s out! Join us for OBJECTIFS JUNIORS’ fun, hands-on workshops exploring different aspects of photography and film. Along the way, participants will learn about the possibilities of visual storytelling, make new friends and practise teamwork and problem-solving, and get to express themselves creatively and develop their unique voice!
These workshops are recommended for ages 5 to 12. No prior experience is required.
Week 1: STOP-MOTION SUPERHEROES
24 to 26 Nov 2021 | $290
Animators, assemble! Your journey to becoming stop-motion superheroes starts with this energetic full-body workout. Pixilation is a stop-motion technique where people become life-size “puppets” whose slight movements are captured frame by frame to produce an animated sequence. In this workshop, we will move our bodies, make creative use of everyday objects as costumes and props, and work as a group to create our very own animated story.
Almost every successful superhero is supported by a smart sidekick, and together they can outsmart every sinister supervillain! Learn what makes a well-rounded, interesting character, and how their physical attributes give us clues about their personalities and values. We will use materials like paper and plasticine to build two original characters, and learn more about everyone’s unique creations.
Animation is about bringing characters to life. We will learn storyboarding and plan out our superhero stories, and use a free mobile app to create a short stop-motion sequence with our original character figurines and other props. Finally, we will “graduate” from stop-motion superhero school with a mini showcase of our works!
Week 2: A NATURAL EYE: PHOTOGRAPHS AND PHOTO CRAFTS
1 to 3 Dec 2021 | $220
Have you heard of “blueprints’, used by scientists, architects…and artists? Cyanotype printing has been in use since the 1840s, long before digital photography! In this workshop, we will work with found materials from nature like leaves and flowers and harness the power of the sun to create our own cyanotype prints.
Nature is all around us in the “Garden City” of Singapore. How can we draw inspiration from it and capture its colours and features through photography? Equipped with digital cameras and tips to shoot more interesting images, we will explore the neighbourhood, paying close attention to colours, textures, angles, shadows and reflections as we work to complete a fun Nature Bingo challenge.
How can photography be combined with other kinds of arts and crafts to create unique items that add beauty and meaning to our daily lives? Working with our cyanotype prints and printed out photographs from our photowalk, we will create our very own handmade notebook and a framed collage to take home. We will end the session with a mini exhibition of our crafts, which reflect our unique ways of seeing the world!
Week 3: YOUNG YOUTUBERS: VIDEO PRODUCTION WORKSHOP
8 to 10 Dec 2021 | $220
How do your favourite pop idols put their impeccable music videos together? Behind the videos we watch and love is loads of practice and preparation. In this pre-production session, we will plan and rehearse a song and dance segment, plan and design our costumes, and learn about the various roles behind the scenes, from direction to gaffer, that work together to shoot a video!
It’s time to set up our cameras and lights, get on our costumes, and warm up our voices and bodies as we prepare to shoot! After one final rehearsal, we will take turns as director, cameraperson, sound-person, gaffer (lighting) and talent, and shoot our short music video sequence together. Each participant will also get their moment in the limelight through a solo segment!
The fun and hard work don’t stop after the shoot. Editing is where it all comes together, with the careful selection of the best sots to tell the story you want to, from the right angles, and perhaps even with special effects for added flair! We will use a free editing software to do a simple edit of our footage, and celebrate with a screening of our final music video!
Week 4: I LOVE SINGAPORE: PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS
15 to 17 Dec 2021 | $220
Waterloo Street, where Objectifs is located amidst a range of arts spaces and different religions’ places of worship, reflects Singapore’s rich multicultural heritage. Equipped with digital cameras and tips to shoot more interesting images, we will explore the neighbourhood and learn interesting trivia about the different communities around us and the stories behind the buildings we photograph!
Objectifs is a stone’s throw from Singapore’s Civic District, which is home to many old buildings, monuments — and even trees — that have witnessed years of history unfold. On this photowalk that will take us to nearby sites like the National Museum of Singapore, the Singapore Art Museum and the SMU Campus Green, we will explore how these spaces look today, and use digital cameras to shoot interesting photographs in these surroundings.
The meeting of cultures in Singapore has brought us delicious food that we enjoy not just on festive occasions but daily! In this workshop, we will try our hand at food styling — the art of preparing food to be photographd — and learn how to photograph it with a smartphone so it looks as delicious as it tastes.
Using our photographs from these sessions, we will work on a mini journal documenting what we love about Singapore and what we have learned. From now on, you will be able to photograph your meals and even your cooking and baking experiments!
