Course Description 
This masterclass by veteran actress Yeo Yann Yann offers young and emerging actors and directors working in or aspiring to work in film and television the opportunity to learn in an intimate, hands-on setting about scripts, characters, casting and effective communication throughout the course of a production.

Upon completion, participants will have learned:

  • Practical skills in reading scripts and understanding characters deeply to inform their performance, and how to write scripts more clearly to make this possible
  • How to attend casting calls with greater confidence
  • How to communicate effectively with directors and other stakeholders involved in a production
  • How to cast actors, including non-actors, confidently

Course Overview

Reading Scripts: “The clues are not just in your own lines.”
How can actors closely and effectively read scripts to find clues throughout to understand their characters better? Participants will review sample scripts to practise the tips taught.
Understanding Characters: “The film is a fraction of a character’s life.”
Using sample scripts, participants will go through exercises to understand characters more deeply, including the relationships between characters.
Preparing for Casting 
Actors will learn how to prepare for casting, and directors will learn what they need to look for when casting actors. The session will touch on the differences in casting and working with trained and untrained actors, and how scripts may need to be (re)shaped to suit a non-actor cast for a role.

Pre-requisites and Registration Info: 
This workshop is recommended for young and emerging actors and directors working in or aspiring to work in film and television, including fresh or recent graduates. It is not a must to have had formal training in these disciplines, but prior experience will be useful.

This will not be used to select participants for the workshop but to provide the instructor some background information to inform the course content and examples used.


[Phase 3] Covid-19 Health & Safety Advisory and Measures
Please note this workshop will take place offline, at Objectifs. The following measures will apply:

  • Maximum class size of eight participants + one instructor
  • Participants to wear face masks throughout and to be seated at least 1m apart from each other
  • Instructors to wear face masks, or face shields are permitted while they are teaching and they must maintain a distance from the participants
  • Frequent sanitising of equipment and commonly touched surfaces
  • Sign-in / sign-out required via the SafeEntry app and temperatures will be taken
