“It was at my last exhibition, ‘Eyes Wide Open’, that I met Tomoko. She was already modelling for painters and volunteered to model for me as she liked the work that she saw in the exhibition. I have taken a lot of photos of dancers but I have never shot nudes in earnest before. So this started a collaboration between the two of us.

Nudes are a perennial favourite of photographers and painters alike, but the difficulty is in saying something worthwhile where so many have gone before. One must respect one’s subject, understand the sensuality of the line, the ripe potential of the curve. So many beautiful women appear almost nude, explicitly on magazine covers. So many photographers play with the duality of black and white nudes and call it art photography. The collaboration between Tomoko and me is to continue the exploration of the nude while respecting the huge amount of work that has gone before...

No portrait can capture the complexity that is a person. And as beautiful and immediate as images are, they cannot open the hearts and minds of the subject, or even show the environmental context of the person in totality. And yet, a portrait can reveal more than what is on the surface of the skin...”
