Inspirations from Landmarks is about spaces. It is about spaces where we create our lives, find familiarity, seek solace, share relationships and discover intimacy, where the alternative lifestyle is not alternative anymore.

Artist Statement
Chris Yap

“ Inspirations from Landmarks was born out of my work with a W!ldRice Theatre company production titled Landmarks – Asian Boys Vol. 2. The production was a collection of eight plays based on eight landmarks and the literal and metaphorical spaces represented by them. Working with the actors and crew, I was moved into creating a series of background images that interwove emotions and spaces.

This exhibition will give me an opportunity to present these images in a different light – to a new audience, in a new space, and in a brand new style of presentation that will at once be theatrical and still. Through this exhibition, I hope to open up the creative minds and eyes of the viewers to the many different forms of photography as well as its presentation.”

Introduction
Alfian bin Sa'at

Playwright, Landmarks: Asian Boys Vol. 2

"In February 2004, the play Landmarks: Asian Boys Vol. 2 was performed at the Esplanade Studio Theatre. The photographer, Chris Yap, was enlisted as a collaborator in the production. The images he eventually produced formed an integral part of the play, often providing both text and subtext to the narrative.

Working closely with the actors and director, Yap took varying approaches to establish a visual language that would underline the play's themes, without being merely decorative or auxiliary.

Ultimately, the images demonstrated the craft of an artist who was attuned to the play's nuances. Landmarks: Asian Boys Vol. 2 was about navigating through a terrain marked by love, desire and longing. Yap's sensitive and inimitable photographs were both the road signs as well as the mementoes from that journey."
