Kwodrent: February Preview

Study on Rectangles
A fashion showcase of the first series of works by Grace Tan
Along with a photography exhibition by Ming

February 27 and 28, 2004
11am to 630pm daily
Open to public, free admission

Kwodrent started in 2003 as a personal journey to explore clothes in a different light.

The pieces from Kwodrent are designed and made by hand. They are constructed from rectangles of cloth without shaping and cutting into them. This restriction in the geometry produces unexpected designs that respond to the human body in an interesting manner.

In the series, the pieces are numbered and dated. No paper patterns are created, making reproduction possible only with reference to notes and diagrams. As such, every piece is very special and is available in a limited number.

In the photography exhibition, flattened pieces from the Kwodrent series are shot with a camera mounted directly above the subject, allowing interesting motifs formed from the process to be captured. It liberates how clothes are represented and perceived, at the same time allowing room for play and abstraction. Unconsciously, we are drawn to see them as abstract forms or configurations from spontaneous arrangement - and not just clothes.

This season, selected pirces from the Kwodrent series are available exclusively at Cose Ipanema (113 Collins Street, Melbourne, Victoria 3000).
