| The struggle for peace is not always a calm one. James
Leong and Lynn Lee’s Passabe reveal a war-torn village
slowly coming to terms with the pain and violence faced during East Timor’s
quest for independence. Banned during the 2006 Jakarta International film
Festival, the documentary is an exploration into the universal themes
of forgiveness and reconciliation. On a lighter note, the preceding short
film Kalah Atau Menang looks to an alternative when solving disputes,
and the results are surprisingly, hilarious. Sep's Film Programme-After The Revolution Passabe(2006) 111 min/ Documentary/ Singapore Director: James Leong and Lynn Lee With English subtitles Synopsis: The remote village of Passabe lies on the precarious border between East and West Timor. It is a battle-scarred community with a horrific past. In the run-up to the vote for independence in 1999, Passabe was a base for hundreds of pro-Indonesia militiamen who participated in a rampage of violence that climaxed in a bloody massacre. Five years on, one man publicly owns up to his role in the massacre, an explosive move that exposes him to persecution on both sides. Shot over a year, this film documents a quest for forgiveness and redemption, and hopefully, reconciliation. Kalah Atau Menang(2005) 9 min/Comedy/ Indonesia Director: Donny Prasetyo Utomo Language: Bahasa Indonesia with English subtitles Synopsis: Markun and Jarkin are two gangs that are always at odds with each other. The stakes are raised when they decide to settle their opposing views with a bet.
